Another all day outing was to the Patagonia area with the first stop being to Patagonia State Park. One of my favorite birds from the trip were the Pyrrhuloxia. I saw one briefly on the first day but when I was at the Canoa Ranch Conservation Park I heard an unfamiliar call so I started to track it down. When I finally found the bird I was excited to find this guy and he sat still and I was able to get a few images. He was in the sun so I was able to increase the shutter speed to 1/1250 with an f/5.6 and an ISO200.
I also found a Greater Roadrunner, Redheads, Spotted Sandpiper, a Kestrel harassing a Red-tailed Hawk, a Say’s Phoebe, and a Vermilion Flycatcher in name a few.
At Patagonia State Park I saw Rufous-winged Sparrows, more Pyrrhuloxia, and White-winged Doves. The next stop was to Paton Hummingbird Center, which was Paton’s home that was converted into a wildlife refuge. Target birds were hummingbirds and I did find the Broad-billed and Violet-crowned Hummingbirds as well as Curve-billed Thrasher and an Inca Dove.
Another target bird was the Cactus Wren. I heard one in the Las Vegas area but I was able to get very close to many during my time in the Tucson area. This one I found when we were giving the pups a leg stretching walk at the Tangerine Sky Park and on a cactus. It was a great trip and I was able to find 19 new life birds. Not a bad trip.
